Goatscape

The Old Testament describes the ancient Israelites performing an atonement ceremony by casting a goat out of the camp to carry away the sins of the people. Goatscape was a collaborative performance that in the wake of 9-11, was inspired by this ritual.

The Monday after Thanksgiving, the goat was paraded from Chelsea to Lower Manhattan and left near the World Trade Center site for a day. The effigy ended up covered in layers of handwritten notes, objects, photographs, and flowers.

Goatscape now resides in the permanent collection of 9-11 related art and artifacts at The New York Historical Society in Manhattan.
